Welcome to Nick Asoian's Recovery Site!

2009-07-23

Here is where you will find all the updates, info, news, etc on Nick's recovery. Nick has been diagnosed with stage 2b-3b Nodular Sclerosing Hodgkins Lymphoma. Nick was diagnosed while coaching ski racing in New Zealand in the summer of 2008, and he has been battling the disease here, at home in Vail, ever since. As long-time Vail residents, Nick, his parents Kate and Mark, and brother Nathan have been heavily involved in ski racing with Ski Club Vail, where Nick was an athlete and has been working as a coach for the past 5 seasons. Nick is the kind of person whose friendship has no bounds. Anyone who has known him over the years is amazed with his caring touch and kind heart. His loyalty to friends and family and compassion for all are unequaled. In trying to emulate those qualities, his friends have started a website as a portal into his world right now and as way to ask for help on behalf of Nick. As of July 2009, Nick has completed his first round (8 months) of chemotherapy. 90% of people with Hodgkins Lymphoma are cured or go into remission after this first round, but Nick has found himself in the other 10%. As a result, Nick now faces a much more intensive and demanding second round of chemotherapy that involves long hospital stays and extensive travel to Denver. Nick also faces a bone marrow transplant, full-body radiation and 5 weeks in Denver at the end of his current chemotherapy prescription.

Nick It was great seeing you when I was in Vail a couple of weeks ago. I'm so sorry the world has changed for you since then. You've been part of my extended family since you were a kid. I've always been taken by your enthusiasm and broad smile. You've been a great friend not only to Matt but Katy and Aimee as well. This has made you an important person in my life. I know I speak for all of us when I tell you you we think of you every day. As hard a time as this is for you it is exactly your optimistic attitude and approach to life that will see you through this. Stay positive and know you have many people who hold you in their thoughts and prayers. Jack Jack

Hi Nick, I just added you as a friend to Face book and read all the updates on your state of being. I am glad you'll be home Wednesday. Please say hi to your mom and dad from me. Can I get you anything, German chocolate, German beer, German lessons? I did not go to Europe this year, but who knows maybe next summer. Take care, be the strong man that you are, I'll see you soon. Rika

Nick you have always been a great caring friend with an open ear for me. As I complained to you about all my back issues you were sitting there sick and didn't even complain at all. You just listened to me. You always seem to amaze me and I know you will pull through. Carey and I are praying for you everyday. We love you and will try to get up to see you soon. Stay strong! Love Kiara

Hi Nick, I live in Eagle and have been in the valley for 15 years. I just finished a BMT transplant at PSL in Denver. I did 3 rounds of Hyper CVAD at University and 1 round of Hyper CVAD at PSL followed by an Autologus transplant. I have experienced allot of what you are about to encounter and if you need a hand or some information or help regarding decisions, give me a shout or e-mail. I may be able to make life a little easier for you. Coleman 471-2891

Hi Nick I know you, even though we never met in person! How? Well, I am your 2nd cousin and my parents are your dad's Aunty Pat and Uncle Jimmy. Two months ago, I sat next to your Aunty Eileen at a family wedding. I must say, you look a lot like her :-) I will keep you and your family in my prayers. Love your cousin Laura
